Heal Your Gums

What Is Gum Periodontal Therapy?

Periodontal therapy is all about taking care of your gums. It’s like giving your gums some extra love when they’re not feeling their best. This treatment helps fight gum disease, which is a common problem that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.

Think of it as a deep cleaning for your gums. The dentist or hygienist removes the buildup of plaque and tartar from above and below your gum line. They might smooth out the roots of your teeth too, making it harder for bacteria to stick around. Sometimes, they’ll use special tools or even lasers to help your gums heal. The goal is to get your gums healthy again and stop the disease from getting worse. At Tkatch Dentistry in High Point, NC, we offer gentle periodontal therapy to help keep your gums healthy and your smile strong.

What is gum periodontal therapy?

Gum periodontal therapy is a range of treatments we offer at Tkatch Dentistry to address gum disease. This can include deep cleaning procedures like scaling and root planing, as well as more advanced treatments for severe cases. The goal is to stop the progression of gum disease, promote healing, and prevent tooth loss.

In our High Point, NC office, we tailor the therapy to each patient’s needs. Early intervention is key, so if you’re noticing signs of gum problems like bleeding or swollen gums, it’s important to schedule a check-up with us promptly.
Signs that you might need gum periodontal therapy include red, swollen, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums, loose teeth, or changes in how your teeth fit together when you bite. However, gum disease can often progress without obvious symptoms in its early stages.

That’s why regular check-ups at our High Point, NC office are crucial. During these visits, we can detect early signs of gum disease and start treatment before it becomes more serious. If you’re noticing any changes in your gums, don’t hesitate to contact us for an evaluation.
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure we often use as a first line of treatment for gum disease. Scaling involves removing plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line. Root planing smooths out rough spots on the tooth roots where bacteria tend to gather, helping the gums reattach to the teeth.

At Tkatch Dentistry, we usually perform this treatment under local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Depending on the extent of the gum disease, we might complete the procedure in one visit to our High Point, NC office, or spread it over multiple appointments.
At Tkatch Dentistry, we prioritize your comfort during all procedures. Most gum therapies, including scaling and root planing, are performed under local anesthesia, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the treatment. You might experience some sensitivity or discomfort for a few days afterward, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

If you’re anxious about the procedure, let us know during your visit to our High Point, NC office. We can discuss additional comfort options to ensure you have a positive experience.
The duration of gum periodontal therapy can vary depending on the severity of your gum disease and the specific treatments needed. A typical scaling and root planing procedure might take 1-2 hours per quadrant of your mouth. We often split this into multiple appointments for your comfort.

More advanced treatments might require several visits to our High Point, NC office over a period of weeks or months. During your initial consultation, we’ll provide a detailed treatment plan including expected timelines.
Recovery after gum periodontal therapy is usually straightforward. You might experience some sensitivity and slight discomfort for a few days, particularly after eating. We recommend eating soft foods and avoiding very hot or cold items during this time.

It’s crucial to maintain good oral hygiene after your treatment, but be gentle when brushing and flossing around the treated areas. We’ll provide detailed aftercare instructions at our High Point, NC office to ensure a smooth recovery and the best possible results from your treatment.
The cost of gum periodontal therapy can vary depending on the extent of the treatment needed. During your consultation at our High Point, NC office, we’ll provide a detailed cost breakdown after examining your gums and determining the appropriate treatment plan
.

At Tkatch Dentistry, we believe in transparent pricing. Many dental insurance plans cover at least part of the cost of gum disease treatment. We’ll help you understand your coverage and discuss payment options to make your treatment as affordable as possible.
While gum periodontal therapy can effectively treat gum disease, it’s possible for the condition to recur if proper oral hygiene isn’t maintained. That’s why ongoing care is crucial. We’ll work with you to develop a maintenance plan, which typically includes more frequent cleanings at our High Point, NC office.

Good home care is also essential. We’ll provide guidance on proper brushing and flossing techniques, and might recommend additional tools like interdental brushes or a water flosser to help keep your gums healthy.
Gum periodontal therapy is generally very safe when performed by experienced professionals like our team at Tkatch Dentistry. However, as with any dental procedure, there are some potential risks. These can include increased tooth sensitivity, gum recession, or in rare cases, infection.

We take all necessary precautions to minimize these risks. During your consultation at our High Point, NC office, we’ll discuss any potential risks and how we manage them to ensure your safety and comfort.
The best way to prevent gum disease is to maintain good oral hygiene. This includes brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using an antiseptic mouthwash. Regular check-ups and cleanings at our High Point, NC office are also crucial for catching and addressing any issues early.

Other factors that can help prevent gum disease include not smoking, eating a balanced diet, and managing stress. If you have risk factors for gum disease, like diabetes or certain medications, we might recommend more frequent check-ups. Remember, prevention is always easier and less costly than treatment!

After your deep cleaning, we talk about how to care for your gums at home. We show you the best ways to brush and floss to keep your gums healthy. We might suggest special tools or rinses to help. We set up a plan for you to come back for regular check-ups.

I came to Tkatch Dentistry for the first time in December 2024. I hadn’t been to the dentist in about 10-12 years, had a tooth bothering me that I wanted extracted and also knew I needed some more work done. Dr. Tkatch was direct with me, that I’m still very young and he felt if I got on top of getting my cavities filled, I’d be in good shape as long as I continue to stay on top of my dental care. He stated “you don’t have a cleaning problem but a flossing problem.” Some may find that rude, but he was right, I never really understood the benefit of flossing and most of my cavities were in areas where if I’d flossed, I may not have the same issues. Now I am an avid, everyday flosser. Your dental health can affect so many other parts of your body including your brain. He got me set up with a treatment plan in which I’ve fulfilled almost all of, nearly a year later and my mouth is feeling much better. During recent cleanings I was complimented on my current home care by the dental hygienist and was pleased to hear “you don’t have a lot going on in there” as I still have a few cavities to fill. Both Dr. Tkatch and Dr. Kevin have treated me and all of the dental hygienists who have assisted have been great! Dr. Tkatch is direct and will tell you like it is and Dr. Kevin is funny and has a bubbly personality. Both great dentists and I appreciate all the work they’ve done to help me and educate me so I can keep all of my teeth for years to come! Edit to add: the office staff have always been kind to me and gone over any potential out of pocket payments that may occur, and have been great when trying to find me a Friday to schedule as it works best with my schedule. Also, I have been put on a waitlist a couple of times for a potential opening at an earlier time and each time they were able to call and offer a time which was great when I needed to get in earlier!

Dr Tkatch and Sabina helped me with extensive dental work and did a superb job on fixing my smile. Both of them explained the entire process in detail and helped made me feel comfortable throughout the entire experience. Their attention to detail is flawless and feel like they spent the same time and effort helping me as if they were doing the same procedure for themselves. The ENTIRE Tkatch staff are really amazing and everyone makes you feel so welcome in their office. I give Tkatch dentistry my highest recommendation and would trust them for any dental procedure big or small. Thank you so much, i appreciate you all!!

Getting a crown along with a computer aided design and manufacturing lesson today. One visit and done. The Industrial Engineer in me is fascinated by the tech. Thanks to Dr. Tkatch and his delightful staff.

I have been coming to Dr.Tkatch for 5 years and I’m very pleased with the practice! The hygienists are so friendly and gentle. The dentists are great too! I have only had cleanings and exams, so I can’t say much about getting a filling or other procedures done, but my husband has and he always has a positive experience. Highly recommend!
