Remove Problem Teeth

What is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is simply the removal of a tooth. It’s like saying goodbye to a tooth that can’t be saved or needs to come out for other reasons. While keeping your natural teeth is always the goal, sometimes taking a tooth out is the best choice for your overall oral health.

There are different reasons why a tooth might need to come out. Maybe it’s badly damaged from decay or injury. Or it could be causing crowding in your mouth. Wisdom teeth often need to be removed if they’re causing problems. The good news is, modern techniques make the process quicker and more comfortable than ever. At Tkatch Dentistry in High Point, NC, we handle extractions with care, making sure you’re comfortable every step of the way.

Safe Extraction Steps

Tooth Extraction Procedure

We make tooth removal as smooth as possible. First, we numb the area completely. Then, we carefully loosen the tooth and remove it with specialized tools. We provide aftercare instructions and discuss replacement options if needed, ensuring your comfort throughout.
1

Extraction Evaluation

At Tkatch Dentistry, we start by looking closely at the tooth that needs to come out. We take x-rays to see the whole tooth and the bone around it. We talk with you about why the tooth needs to be removed and what to expect.

We explain your options for replacing the tooth later if needed. Our team answers all your questions to help you feel ready for the procedure. We check your health history to make sure extraction is safe for you. We want you to feel comfortable and prepared. We're here to help you through this process, right here in High Point, NC.

2

Preparing for Extraction

When it's time for your extraction, we make sure you're comfortable first. We use strong numbing medicine so you don't feel pain during the procedure. If you're nervous, we can talk about ways to help you relax. We might use special tools to loosen the tooth gently.

If needed, we make a small cut in your gum to reach the tooth better. Our team at Tkatch Dentistry is careful and gentle during this step. We take our time to make the process as easy as possible for you. We're focused on getting your tooth out safely and comfortably.

3

Removing the Tooth and Aftercare

Now, we carefully remove your tooth. Sometimes we need to take it out in small pieces. This helps protect the bone around it. After the tooth is out, we clean the area and help stop any bleeding. We might put in a few stitches to help you heal. We give you a gauze pad to bite on and explain how to care for the area at home.

We talk about what foods to eat and how to keep the area clean. We set up a time for you to come back so we can check how you're healing. At Tkatch Dentistry, we're here to support our High Point patients through the whole extraction process. We want to make sure you heal well and feel better soon!

Dental Extraction FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Get comfortable, skilled tooth removal at Tkatch Dentistry in High Point, NC. Dr. Tkatch provides gentle extractions when saving a tooth isn’t possible. Our team makes sure you’re at ease throughout the procedure and guides you through a smooth recovery.

When is a tooth extraction necessary?

At Tkatch Dentistry, we always aim to save your natural teeth when possible. However, extractions become necessary in several situations. These include severe decay that can’t be treated with a root canal, advanced gum disease, crowded teeth in preparation for orthodontic treatment, or impacted wisdom teeth.

Sometimes, a tooth might also need to be removed due to trauma or to prepare for dentures. During your visit to our High Point, NC office, we’ll thoroughly examine your teeth and discuss all available options before recommending an extraction.
At Tkatch Dentistry, we prioritize your comfort during all procedures, including extractions. We use local anesthesia to numb the area completely before the extraction. You’ll feel pressure during the procedure, but you shouldn’t feel pain.

For patients who are anxious or for more complex extractions, we offer sedation options. After the procedure, you might experience some discomfort as the anesthesia wears off, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Our team in High Point, NC will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a comfortable recovery.
The length of a tooth extraction procedure can vary depending on the complexity of the case. A simple extraction of a fully erupted tooth typically takes about 20-40 minutes, including the time for administering anesthesia.

More complex cases, like impacted wisdom teeth, might take longer. During your consultation at our High Point, NC office, we’ll give you a more accurate estimate based on your specific situation. We strive to make the process as efficient as possible while ensuring your comfort and the best possible outcome.
Recovery after a tooth extraction usually takes a few days. You might experience some swelling and discomfort for the first 24-48 hours, which can typically be managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication.

We recommend eating soft foods, avoiding smoking and drinking through straws, and gently rinsing with salt water to promote healing. It’s important to follow the aftercare instructions we provide at our High Point, NC office carefully to prevent complications like dry socket. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a day or two.
The cost of a tooth extraction can vary depending on factors like the complexity of the extraction and whether it’s a simple or surgical procedure. During your consultation at our High Point, NC office, we’ll provide a detailed cost breakdown after examining your tooth.

We accept various forms of payment and can help you understand your insurance coverage. Remember, while extractions might seem costly, leaving a problematic tooth untreated can lead to more expensive dental issues down the line. We’re committed to providing high-quality care at fair prices.
At Tkatch Dentistry, we offer several options for replacing extracted teeth. These include dental implants, bridges, and partial dentures. The best option depends on factors like the location of the extracted tooth, your overall oral health, and your personal preferences.

Dental implants are often the preferred choice as they look and function most like natural teeth. During your visit to our High Point, NC office, we’ll discuss all your options and help you choose the best solution for your specific situation.
If your extraction is done under local anesthesia only, you should be able to drive yourself home after the procedure. However, if you opt for sedation or if we’re extracting multiple teeth, you’ll need someone to drive you home.

We’ll discuss these details during your consultation at our High Point, NC office, ensuring you’re fully prepared for your appointment. Your safety is our priority, so we always recommend arranging transportation if there’s any doubt.
Dry socket is a painful condition that can occur after an extraction if the blood clot in the socket is dislodged or dissolves before the wound heals. To prevent this, we recommend:
  • Avoiding smoking and drinking through straws for at least a week
  • Not rinsing your mouth vigorously for the first 24 hours
  • Eating soft foods and avoiding the extraction site when chewing
  • Following all aftercare instructions provided by our High Point, NC team carefully

If you experience severe pain a few days after your extraction, contact our office immediately as this could be a sign of dry socket.
While tooth extraction is a routine procedure, like any surgery, it does carry some risks. These can include infection, dry socket, or damage to surrounding teeth. However, these complications are rare, especially when the extraction is performed by experienced professionals like our team at Tkatch Dentistry.
We take all necessary precautions to minimize risks and will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions. If you have any concerns before or after your procedure, don’t hesitate to reach out to our High Point, NC office.
The timeline for getting an implant or bridge after an extraction can vary. In some cases, we can place an implant immediately after extraction. However, often we recommend waiting 3-6 months to allow the extraction site to heal fully.

For a bridge, we typically wait about 6-8 weeks after the extraction. During your treatment planning at our High Point, NC office, we’ll discuss the best timeline for your specific case. Our goal is always to ensure the best long-term outcome for your oral health.

I came to Tkatch Dentistry for the first time in December 2024. I hadn’t been to the dentist in about 10-12 years, had a tooth bothering me that I wanted extracted and also knew I needed some more work done. Dr. Tkatch was direct with me, that I’m still very young and he felt if I got on top of getting my cavities filled, I’d be in good shape as long as I continue to stay on top of my dental care. He stated “you don’t have a cleaning problem but a flossing problem.” Some may find that rude, but he was right, I never really understood the benefit of flossing and most of my cavities were in areas where if I’d flossed, I may not have the same issues. Now I am an avid, everyday flosser. Your dental health can affect so many other parts of your body including your brain. He got me set up with a treatment plan in which I’ve fulfilled almost all of, nearly a year later and my mouth is feeling much better. During recent cleanings I was complimented on my current home care by the dental hygienist and was pleased to hear “you don’t have a lot going on in there” as I still have a few cavities to fill. Both Dr. Tkatch and Dr. Kevin have treated me and all of the dental hygienists who have assisted have been great! Dr. Tkatch is direct and will tell you like it is and Dr. Kevin is funny and has a bubbly personality. Both great dentists and I appreciate all the work they’ve done to help me and educate me so I can keep all of my teeth for years to come! Edit to add: the office staff have always been kind to me and gone over any potential out of pocket payments that may occur, and have been great when trying to find me a Friday to schedule as it works best with my schedule. Also, I have been put on a waitlist a couple of times for a potential opening at an earlier time and each time they were able to call and offer a time which was great when I needed to get in earlier!

Dr Tkatch and Sabina helped me with extensive dental work and did a superb job on fixing my smile. Both of them explained the entire process in detail and helped made me feel comfortable throughout the entire experience. Their attention to detail is flawless and feel like they spent the same time and effort helping me as if they were doing the same procedure for themselves. The ENTIRE Tkatch staff are really amazing and everyone makes you feel so welcome in their office. I give Tkatch dentistry my highest recommendation and would trust them for any dental procedure big or small. Thank you so much, i appreciate you all!!
