What Is Sleep Apnea Treatment?

Sleep apnea treatment is all about helping you breathe easy while you sleep. If you’ve got sleep apnea, it means your breathing stops and starts during the night. It’s like your body keeps hitting the pause button on your breathing. This can make you feel tired all day, even if you think you’ve slept enough.

Dentists can help with sleep apnea by making special devices you wear in your mouth while you sleep. These gadgets help keep your airway open, so you can breathe without interruption. Think of it like a tiny doorstop for your throat. It’s not the only treatment out there, but it can be a great option for many people. The goal is to help you get a good night’s sleep and feel refreshed in the morning. At Tkatch Dentistry in High Point, NC, we offer sleep apnea treatments to help you rest better and feel more energized during the day.

Restful Nights Steps

Sleep Apnea Treatment Procedure

We start by assessing your sleep issues and may recommend a sleep study. If needed, we’ll create a custom oral appliance to keep your airway open. We’ll fit the device, make adjustments, and follow up to ensure it’s working well, helping you get the rest you need.
1

Sleep Apnea Screening

At Tkatch Dentistry, we start by talking about your sleep concerns. We ask about things like snoring, feeling tired during the day, or waking up gasping for air. We look at your throat and jaw to check for signs of sleep apnea. We might ask you to fill out a quick questionnaire about your sleep habits.

Our team explains what sleep apnea is and how it can affect your health. We answer all your questions to help you understand what's going on. If we think you might have sleep apnea, we talk about next steps. We're here to help you get better sleep, right here in High Point, NC.

2

Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

If our screening suggests sleep apnea, we work with sleep doctors to get a proper diagnosis. This might involve a sleep study, which you can often do at home. Once we know more, we talk about treatment options.

We might suggest a special dental appliance that helps keep your airway open while you sleep. We explain how it works and how it can help you breathe better at night. Our team at Tkatch Dentistry takes time to answer all your questions. We want you to feel good about the plan to improve your sleep and health.

3

Custom Appliance and Follow-up Care

If a dental appliance is right for you, we take careful measurements of your mouth. We make a custom appliance that fits you perfectly. When it's ready, we show you how to put it in and take care of it. We make sure it feels comfortable and works well for you.

We set up follow-up visits to check how you're doing with the appliance. We might make small adjustments to make it work better for you. We also talk about other ways to improve your sleep, like sleep position or lifestyle changes. At Tkatch Dentistry, we're here to support our High Point patients in getting better sleep and improving their overall health. We want to help you wake up feeling refreshed and energized!

Sleep Apnea Treatment FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Find relief from sleep apnea at Tkatch Dentistry in High Point, NC. Dr. Tkatch provides custom oral appliances that help improve your breathing during sleep. Our comfortable solutions can reduce snoring and help you get the restful sleep you need.

What is sleep apnea and how can Tkatch Dentistry help?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. At Tkatch Dentistry in High Point, NC, we can help diagnose and treat obstructive sleep apnea, the most common type. We offer custom-made oral appliances that help keep your airway open during sleep.

Our team works closely with sleep specialists to ensure you get comprehensive care. During your visit, we’ll discuss your symptoms and, if needed, recommend a sleep study to confirm the diagnosis. Then we’ll create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Common signs of sleep apnea include:
  • Loud snoring
  • Gasping for air during sleep
  • Waking up with a dry mouth or headache
  • Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mood changes

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, it’s important to schedule an evaluation at our High Point, NC office. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent more serious health problems associated with sleep apnea.
Oral appliances for sleep apnea work by slightly repositioning your jaw and tongue to keep your airway open during sleep. At Tkatch Dentistry, we custom-fit these devices to ensure they’re comfortable and effective for you.

The appliance is worn only during sleep and is similar to a sports mouthguard in appearance. Many patients find it more comfortable and convenient than other sleep apnea treatments like CPAP machines.
For mild to moderate sleep apnea, oral appliances can be just as effective as CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines. They’re often preferred by patients who find CPAP machines uncomfortable or difficult to use.

However, for severe sleep apnea, CPAP might still be the best option. At our High Point, NC office, we’ll assess your individual case and work with your sleep specialist to determine the most effective treatment for you.
Most patients adjust to their oral appliance within a few weeks. You might experience some mild discomfort or excess saliva at first, but these issues usually resolve quickly. At Tkatch Dentistry, we’ll schedule follow-up appointments to check your progress and make any necessary adjustments.

We provide detailed instructions on how to use and care for your appliance. If you have any issues or concerns during the adjustment period, our High Point, NC team is always here to help.
With proper care, a sleep apnea oral appliance can last 2-3 years. However, this can vary depending on factors like wear and tear and changes in your mouth structure.

We recommend regular check-ups at our High Point, NC office to assess the condition of your appliance. If you notice any changes in how it fits or its effectiveness, contact us for an evaluation. We can determine if adjustments or replacement are needed.
Yes, children can have sleep apnea, often due to enlarged tonsils or adenoids. At Tkatch Dentistry, we can help diagnose sleep apnea in children and work with pediatric sleep specialists to determine the best treatment approach.

For some children, orthodontic treatments or special oral appliances can help manage sleep apnea. During your visit to our High Point, NC office, we’ll thoroughly evaluate your child’s case and discuss all available options.
The cost of sleep apnea treatment varies depending on the specific treatment needed. During your consultation at our High Point, NC office, we’ll provide a detailed cost breakdown after examining your condition and determining the appropriate treatment plan.

Many dental and medical insurance plans cover sleep apnea treatments. We’ll help you understand your coverage and discuss payment options to make your treatment as affordable as possible.
While most patients adapt well to oral appliances, some might experience temporary side effects such as:
  • Excess saliva or dry mouth
  • Jaw discomfort
  • Slight changes in bite upon waking

These effects are usually mild and short-lived. At Tkatch Dentistry, we’ll monitor your progress closely and make adjustments as needed to minimize any discomfort. If you experience persistent issues, don’t hesitate to contact our High Point, NC office.
Yes, certain lifestyle changes can help manage sleep apnea symptoms:
  • Losing weight if you’re overweight
  • Quitting smoking
  • Avoiding alcohol and sedatives before bedtime
  • Sleeping on your side instead of your back
  • Maintaining a regular sleep schedule

During your visits to our High Point, NC office, we’ll discuss lifestyle modifications that might benefit your specific situation. These changes, combined with professional treatment, can significantly improve your sleep quality and overall health. Remember, at Tkatch Dentistry, we’re committed to helping you achieve restful, healthy sleep. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any concerns about sleep apnea or other sleep-related dental issues.

I came to Tkatch Dentistry for the first time in December 2024. I hadn’t been to the dentist in about 10-12 years, had a tooth bothering me that I wanted extracted and also knew I needed some more work done. Dr. Tkatch was direct with me, that I’m still very young and he felt if I got on top of getting my cavities filled, I’d be in good shape as long as I continue to stay on top of my dental care. He stated “you don’t have a cleaning problem but a flossing problem.” Some may find that rude, but he was right, I never really understood the benefit of flossing and most of my cavities were in areas where if I’d flossed, I may not have the same issues. Now I am an avid, everyday flosser. Your dental health can affect so many other parts of your body including your brain. He got me set up with a treatment plan in which I’ve fulfilled almost all of, nearly a year later and my mouth is feeling much better. During recent cleanings I was complimented on my current home care by the dental hygienist and was pleased to hear “you don’t have a lot going on in there” as I still have a few cavities to fill. Both Dr. Tkatch and Dr. Kevin have treated me and all of the dental hygienists who have assisted have been great! Dr. Tkatch is direct and will tell you like it is and Dr. Kevin is funny and has a bubbly personality. Both great dentists and I appreciate all the work they’ve done to help me and educate me so I can keep all of my teeth for years to come! Edit to add: the office staff have always been kind to me and gone over any potential out of pocket payments that may occur, and have been great when trying to find me a Friday to schedule as it works best with my schedule. Also, I have been put on a waitlist a couple of times for a potential opening at an earlier time and each time they were able to call and offer a time which was great when I needed to get in earlier!

Dr Tkatch and Sabina helped me with extensive dental work and did a superb job on fixing my smile. Both of them explained the entire process in detail and helped made me feel comfortable throughout the entire experience. Their attention to detail is flawless and feel like they spent the same time and effort helping me as if they were doing the same procedure for themselves. The ENTIRE Tkatch staff are really amazing and everyone makes you feel so welcome in their office. I give Tkatch dentistry my highest recommendation and would trust them for any dental procedure big or small. Thank you so much, i appreciate you all!!
