What Are Cleaning and Prevention?

Cleaning and prevention are the cornerstones of a healthy smile. Think of them as your teeth’s best friends, working together to keep your mouth happy. Regular cleanings at the dentist’s office go beyond what you can do at home with your toothbrush. They help remove stubborn plaque and tartar that can lead to cavities and gum problems.

Prevention is all about stopping dental issues before they start. It’s like putting up a shield to protect your teeth and gums. This includes things like fluoride treatments to strengthen your enamel and dental sealants to guard against decay. It also means learning the best ways to brush and floss at home.

At Tkatch Dentistry in High Point, NC, we’re big fans of cleaning and prevention. We believe they’re the keys to long-lasting oral health and confident smiles.

Cleaning and Prevention FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I schedule a dental cleaning at Tkatch Dentistry?

We recommend scheduling a dental cleaning every six months at our High Point, NC office. These regular visits allow us to remove plaque and tartar buildup, which helps prevent cavities and gum disease. They also give us the opportunity to catch any potential issues early.

Regular cleanings are a cornerstone of good oral health. During these appointments, we not only clean your teeth but also perform a thorough examination. This proactive approach can save you time, discomfort, and money in the long run by addressing small problems before they become more serious.
During a typical cleaning at our High Point, NC office, one of our skilled dental hygienists will carefully remove plaque and tartar from your teeth using specialized tools. We’ll also polish your teeth to remove surface stains and give you that fresh, clean feeling.

The cleaning is just one part of the appointment. We’ll also perform a comprehensive oral exam, checking for signs of decay, gum disease, or other issues. X-rays may be taken if needed. At Tkatch Dentistry, we believe in patient education, so we’ll take time to discuss any findings and provide personalized advice on maintaining your oral health at home.
Yes, we offer fluoride treatments at Tkatch Dentistry, and they can be beneficial for both children and adults. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay. For adults, fluoride can be especially helpful if you’re prone to cavities or have sensitive teeth.

In our High Point, NC practice, we assess each patient’s individual needs to determine if fluoride treatment would be beneficial. Factors we consider include your oral health history, current condition, and risk factors for decay. The treatment is quick, painless, and can provide an extra layer of protection for your teeth between regular cleanings.
Preventing gum disease starts with good oral hygiene at home – brushing twice daily, flossing, and using an antiseptic mouthwash. At Tkatch Dentistry, we play a crucial role in gum disease prevention through our professional cleanings and examinations.

Our team in High Point, NC is trained to spot early signs of gum disease that you might not notice at home. During your cleanings, we remove tartar buildup that can lead to gum inflammation. We also provide personalized advice on improving your at-home care routine. If we detect any signs of gum disease, we’ll work with you to develop an appropriate treatment plan to address it promptly.
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth to prevent decay. At Tkatch Dentistry, we often recommend sealants, especially for children and teenagers, as these age groups are particularly prone to cavities in their molars.

However, sealants can be beneficial for adults too. The application process is quick and painless, often completed during your regular cleaning appointment at our High Point, NC office. Sealants act as a barrier, protecting the enamel from plaque and acids. They’re a simple yet effective way to prevent cavities and maintain good oral health.
Diet plays a significant role in your dental health. Foods high in sugar and acid can contribute to tooth decay and enamel erosion. At Tkatch Dentistry, we emphasize the importance of a balanced diet for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

During your visits to our High Point, NC office, we’re happy to discuss nutrition and its impact on your oral health. We might recommend reducing sugary snacks and drinks, increasing your intake of calcium-rich foods, and drinking plenty of water. Remember, good nutrition not only benefits your overall health but also contributes to a healthier smile.
Yes, oral cancer screenings are a standard part of our preventive care at Tkatch Dentistry. We perform these quick, painless examinations during your regular check-ups to look for any signs of oral cancer or precancerous conditions.

Early detection is crucial in successfully treating oral cancer, which is why we make these screenings a priority in our High Point, NC practice. Our dentists are trained to identify subtle changes or abnormalities in your mouth that could indicate a problem. If we notice anything unusual, we’ll discuss our findings with you and recommend appropriate next steps.
At Tkatch Dentistry, we believe that a good at-home care routine is essential for maintaining oral health between professional cleanings. We recommend brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing at least once a day, and using an antiseptic mouthwash.

Our team in High Point, NC is always happy to provide personalized advice on improving your routine. We can demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques, recommend specific oral care products, and discuss how to address any particular concerns you might have. Remember, your at-home care complements the professional care you receive at our office, working together to keep your smile healthy and bright.
At Tkatch Dentistry, we generally recommend soft-bristled toothbrushes, as they’re effective at removing plaque without damaging your enamel or gums. Both manual and electric toothbrushes can be effective – the best choice is the one you’re most likely to use consistently.

For toothpaste, we typically suggest using one that contains fluoride to help prevent tooth decay. During your visits to our High Point, NC office, we can provide more personalized recommendations based on your specific oral health needs. For instance, we might suggest a toothpaste for sensitive teeth if that’s a concern for you.
At Tkatch Dentistry, we understand that dental anxiety can make it challenging for some patients to maintain regular cleanings. We’ve created a warm, welcoming environment in our High Point, NC office and our team is trained to be patient and understanding with anxious patients.

We encourage open communication – let us know about your concerns so we can address them. We can explain each step of the cleaning process, take breaks if needed, or explore comfort options like music or stress balls. For severe anxiety, we can discuss sedation options. Remember, regular cleanings often mean less invasive procedures in the long run. We’re here to work with you to find a comfortable way to maintain your oral health.

I came to Tkatch Dentistry for the first time in December 2024. I hadn’t been to the dentist in about 10-12 years, had a tooth bothering me that I wanted extracted and also knew I needed some more work done. Dr. Tkatch was direct with me, that I’m still very young and he felt if I got on top of getting my cavities filled, I’d be in good shape as long as I continue to stay on top of my dental care. He stated “you don’t have a cleaning problem but a flossing problem.” Some may find that rude, but he was right, I never really understood the benefit of flossing and most of my cavities were in areas where if I’d flossed, I may not have the same issues. Now I am an avid, everyday flosser. Your dental health can affect so many other parts of your body including your brain. He got me set up with a treatment plan in which I’ve fulfilled almost all of, nearly a year later and my mouth is feeling much better. During recent cleanings I was complimented on my current home care by the dental hygienist and was pleased to hear “you don’t have a lot going on in there” as I still have a few cavities to fill. Both Dr. Tkatch and Dr. Kevin have treated me and all of the dental hygienists who have assisted have been great! Dr. Tkatch is direct and will tell you like it is and Dr. Kevin is funny and has a bubbly personality. Both great dentists and I appreciate all the work they’ve done to help me and educate me so I can keep all of my teeth for years to come! Edit to add: the office staff have always been kind to me and gone over any potential out of pocket payments that may occur, and have been great when trying to find me a Friday to schedule as it works best with my schedule. Also, I have been put on a waitlist a couple of times for a potential opening at an earlier time and each time they were able to call and offer a time which was great when I needed to get in earlier!

Dr Tkatch and Sabina helped me with extensive dental work and did a superb job on fixing my smile. Both of them explained the entire process in detail and helped made me feel comfortable throughout the entire experience. Their attention to detail is flawless and feel like they spent the same time and effort helping me as if they were doing the same procedure for themselves. The ENTIRE Tkatch staff are really amazing and everyone makes you feel so welcome in their office. I give Tkatch dentistry my highest recommendation and would trust them for any dental procedure big or small. Thank you so much, i appreciate you all!!
